BIM Level 2 Key Documents

BIM Level 2 Key Documents

The Bew-Richards BIM maturity triangle lists out the documents and standards associated with BIM Level 2. Over the course of the last couple of years (certainly since the publication of PAS 1192-2 2013) the maturity triangle has evolved. The documents have been taken from the most recent document PAS 1192-5 2015, plus the generally accepted CIC BIM Protocol, Uniclass 2015 and the Digital Plan of Work.

Government Soft Landings (GSL) have been omitted from the list below (and are generally accepted as a technical requirement of Level 2) but have been listed in the BIM Level 2 Supporting Documents.

BS 1192:2007+A2:2015 Collaborative production of architectural, engineering and construction information .

Code of practice To make the most of the collaborative working process, a common methodology for managing the data produced by and between all parties must

be used. This should include the naming of data as well as a process for exchanging data

PAS 1192-2:2013 Specification for information management for the capital/delivery phase of construction projects using Building Information Modelling This document provides information on the management of data produced within a BIM project environment, and supplements the processes and procedures contained in BS 1192:2007
PAS 1192-3:2014  (Corrigendum No. 1) Specification for information management for the operational phase of assets using building information modelling This is a partner doc to PAS 1192-2 focusing on the operational phase of assets for both new and old buildings and like PAS 1192-2, it applies to both building and infrastructure assets
BS 1192-4:2014 Collaborative production of information Part 4: Fulfilling employer’s information exchange requirements using COBie BS 1192-4:2014 defines expectations for the exchange of information throughout the lifecycle of a Facility. The use of COBie ensures that information can be prepared and used without the need for knowledge of the sending and receiving applications or databases. It ensures that the information exchange can be reviewed and validated for compliance, continuity and completeness.
PAS 1192-5:2015 Specification for security minded building information modelling, digital built environments and smart asset management This PAS outlines security threats to the use of information during asset conception, procurement, design, construction, operation, and disposal. It addresses the steps required to create and cultivate an appropriate security mindset and the security culture necessary to enable business to unlock new and more efficient processes and collaborative ways of working. The PAS has been developed to integrate a security-minded approach into the construction lifecycle processes as specified in PAS 1192-2 and the asset management processes described in PAS 1192-3.
BS 7000-4:2013 Design management systems. Part 4. Guide to managing design in construction BS 7000-4 gives guidance on management of the construction design process at all levels, for all organizations and for all types of construction projects. The guidance given applies to purpose-built constructions, equipment and components. It a key document for those who work in and with the construction industry, particularly designers and those managing design. Where general management principles are given, they may be adapted to suit any size of design organization or construction project. The guidance given applies to management of design activities throughout the life-cycle of a construction project, and the principles of the facilities management function
BS 8536-1:2015 Briefing for design and construction. Code of practice for facilities management (Buildings infrastructure) BS 8536-1:2015 is part of the BIM level 2 suite of documents developed to help the construction industry adopt BIM by 2016. It gives recommendations for briefing for design and construction, to ensure that designers consider the expected performance of a building in use. The standard applies to all new buildings projects and major refurbishments.
Uniclass 2015 Classification embedded within the NBS Toolkit Uniclass2015 is a unified classification for the UK industry covering all construction sectors. It contains consistent tables classifying items of all scale from a facility such as a railway down through to products such as a CCTV camera in a railway station
Digital Plan of Work Delivery plan embedded within the NBS Toolkit
